For my Perspectives self-portrait, I decided to paint a black and white image of me with blue accents. I chose this block of wood as my canvas because it had two shallow cavities right where I wanted to draw the eyes, which I enjoyed because it gives the painting the illusion of the eyes following you where you go.
I chose to do this in black and white because it portrays the way I see the world: somewhat colorless and bland, and I like the way it makes it so that the world sees me as I see the world. The blue accents contradict this, but blue is also associated with the cold, so it gives the whole piece an air of cold blandness, which I enjoy. I also gave myself bags under my eyes to represent how tired I generally feel.
I added the collar and chain because, on occasion, I feel chained by other people's expectations of me, and the blue-to-black gradient background accents this. Since the chain goes toward the black, it's chaining me to the bad things, to the dark, and keeping me from going toward the only bright color in the piece.
Your self portrait has wonderful symbolism! I especially love the chain to the darkness and the *cold* blue. The wood also made the piece feel more rough, and not just the texture.
ReplyDeleteI can see the blandness you describe in the face of you in the painting as well
This is very personal and deep and i can easily relate to this not too mention that the art is outstanding really a wonderful self portrait.
ReplyDeleteI really love this piece and if i could, i would like to be able to create something this masterful myself but unfortunately this form of art is lost to me and in a sense i understand it less, than if say the same was written(like your description) and therefore i cant appreciate the total beauty of it... your story shall i say held my attention for more than a moment and the meaning is something i can agree with and stand beside.
ReplyDeletei love that way that you describe the world as black and white, i see the world the same way sometimes but try not to , very strong piece.
ReplyDeleteThis is so creative! I would've never thought of drawing on wood. Your rationale blew me away with all the symbols I never would've thought of if I didn't read it. I like how you said the world is colorless and bland.
ReplyDeleteFor starters i really like the painting and i like how it is done on wood, very creative. i also like how three colors can mean so much, making it a very strong piece. i like how it brought me to start thinking differently of the way i see people.
